Canadian Insurance Information

Most Canadian roller derby leagues purchase their insurance through Roller Sports Canada (RSC) or the Canadian Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (CWRDA).  Due to this, there are a couple of things that USARS leagues need to be aware of when it comes to bouting against a Canadian league.  The details of the 3 possible scenarios are discussed below:

1.    USARS league traveling to Canada to bout.
For USARS accident insurance to be valid in Canada for a bout, the USARS league must sanction the event and submit the following in writing to the USARS national office ($100 sanction fee & the document must be signed by a club officer):

            Date of Request
            Date of Bout and Opponent

“We, the undersigned, who represent the (state name of your club), Club ID #, respectfully request USARS coverage for our bout against (state name of Canadian team) to be held at (name of facility, address, city, country) on (state the date).”

Then, you must list the real names (not derby names) of all the members that will be participating in the bout- include their USARS # and date of birth by their name.

2.    Roller Sports Canada (RSC) insured Canadian league that travels down to the U.S. to participate in a USARS sanctioned event.
The coverage that Canadian leagues have through the RSC includes international sports liability.   The accident/medical coverage is for practices, competitions, and team travel within Canada only.

If the Canadian skaters do not have USARS, they must either (a) purchase single event cards for the sanctioned event or (b) show proof that they have purchased the out-of-country accident coverage from the RSC.

Canadians can purchase the accident coverage from the RSC for approximately $2 a day per skater.  If they do this, they must provide the USARS host league with the declaration/invoice pages.  These pages must list the effective date (date coverage is valid), the number of individuals that paid for the coverage, the total price paid for coverage, as well as list the names and birthdates of the individuals that are covered.  This declaration page must be forwarded to the USARS national office for verification.

NOTE:  If the Canadian league purchases out-of-country accident coverage through the RSC, each individual skater will have accident/medical coverage through the organization that they are insured through.  For example, an individual with a current USARS membership will be covered under the USARS policy and a skater insured through RSC will fall under the RSC policy.

3.    Canadian Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (CWRDA) insured Canadian league that travels down to the U.S. to participate in a USARS sanctioned event.
The coverage that is provided to these leagues does include sports accident coverage in the United States, and the liability “coverage territory” is worldwide, with suits to be brought in Canada only.

If the Canadian skaters do not have USARS, they must either (a) purchase single event cards for the sanctioned event or (b) show proof that they are insured through the Canadian Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (CWRDA).

The documentation that is required to verify insurance coverage to USARS includes (a) a copy of the Canadian roller derby league’s certificate of insurance and (b) a copy of each participating skater’s membership card.  All skaters insured through CWRDA are issued a membership card which includes the expiration date, legal name, skate name, league association and member number.  Prior to the event, all of these documents must be forwarded to the USARS national office for verification.

NOTE:  If the Canadian league provides the proper documentation of coverage through CWRDA, each individual skater will have accident/medical coverage through the organization that they are insured through.  For example, an individual with a current USARS membership will be covered under the USARS policy and a skater insured through CWRDA will fall under the CWRDA policy.
